I offer two types of nature based therapies, Walk and Talk and Ecotherapy. If you are interested in one of these options we will assess your interest, needs and suitability for these offerings.
Walk and Talk is where client and therapist walk outdoors instead of sitting in an office. Walk and Talk gets clients moving literally and figuratively. It often helps people who feel stuck, move forward in their lives. While walking one’s physiology changes and this creates a catalyst for a different level of processing. Walking releases endorphins which have the effect of enhancing one’s mood. For some people face to face contact in an office can be uncomfortable, when we are walking side by side it can allow for improved comfort and easier engagement. Being in nature also has tremendous healing power and the ability to help regulate the nervous system. I find this approach works well with those who want to move forward in their lives, teenagers or adults who have difficulty opening up, busy professionals or new parents who have difficulty making time for movement, exercise or time outdoors.
Ecotherapy is based on the idea that as humans we are inherently connected with nature. The healing and supportive capacity that nature can offer is infinite. Through connection with nature and the earth, people are able to reconnect with themselves, others and often something greater.
Through this approach I will assess your nature connection, utilize indoor interventions or we may conduct a session in a natural setting. We will work together on current difficulties as well as allowing one to tune into their mind, body and spirit while allowing nature to help support you. Ecotherapy can include mindfulness, creativity, interaction with the natural world, ritual, art and movement. For many, disconnection with nature is often a source of mental health issues and overwhelm. Ecotherapy can further heal a person’s inner experience and enhance one’s connection to the natural environment and beyond.

How is Walk and Talk or Ecotherapy different from traditional therapy?
Walk and Talk and Ecotherapy can provide multiple benefits! You will have an opportunity to address your emotional needs with an experienced and qualified therapist while allowing nature to help facilitate your growth and healing. Life is busy- Walking and Ecotherapy allow you to maximize your precious time to address your physical and emotional needs simultaneously.
What should I wear to the session?
You should dress comfortably with supportive footwear. Be sure to consider the weather and bring layers in case it cools down or warms up during your session.
What about the weather?
It is always the client’s choice to make in relation to either working indoors or out. If it is decided to carry on despite the weather it is important to dress appropriately.
Can anyone participate in Walk and Talk or Ecotherapy?
It is encouraged that you speak with your doctor to determine if Walk and Talk is appropriate for you if you have concerns regarding your health or medical condition. Ecotherapy is less about exercise and more about slowing down and connecting with yourself, nature and the outside world. You do not need to be super fit or outdoorsy to benefit from this therapy.
What if I feel I am out of shape and not sure if I can do the walk?
Each session will be tailored to the individual. We will go at a pace and distance that is appropriate for you.
Where will we walk?
Originally we will meet in the office. We will determine whether in office or outdoor sessions are appropriate. From my office there are beautiful neighborhood walks or easy trails. There are also several local parks and locations around Sonoma county that may be chosen to meet particular therapeutic needs.
